What is Sexual Orientation?

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Queer, Questioning, Asexual, Straight.

The labels describe who attracts you romantically and sexually. This is something that can change over time, but may not. Sexual orientation is not something that can be changed, it is not a choice. Some individuals may have a hard time understanding or accepting their sexual orientation.

Understanding your sexual identity can be confusing at times.  Maybe you are not sure of what is going on inside or who you are attracted to. Coming out can be a hard process for many people; it can be scary, especially if you have little or no support. Having someone to talk to can help. Coming out is a process of discussing your sexual orientation or gender identity, but it is important to find the right words and the right people with whom to be open.

Sex and gender are not the same thing.

Sex is assigned at birth based on the genitals with which you are born. Those who identify as intersex do not fit into the male/female category. Gender is based on what society thinks how one should look, behave, and act. Gender identity is based on how an individual feels inside and how you choose to portray your gender through appearance.

You do not have to go through this alone, finding someone you can trust can help you navigate your own thoughts and feelings regarding your sexuality. I can help by providing a person to listen and help you understand your sexual identity. I can also help if you need to find the words to be able to come out to your family and friends.

Love, acceptance, support, and safety are vital in everyone’s life, no matter whom they love, their gender, their sexual orientation or their sexual identity.
